Due to its natural attractions, mild climate and strong economy, Tauranga has grown to become New Zealand’s fifth-largest city.

It is a very popular lifestyle and tourism destination and features diverse scenery ranging from popular beaches, such as Mount Maunganui, harbour environments and lakes, to lush bush-clad mountains with waterfalls, such as the popular McLaren Falls. Tauranga is well known for specialised manufacturing, primary sector automation technology, natural health products, boat building, IT and high-end food manufacturing.

The area is well serviced by educational facilities and Tauranga is home to the Bay of Plenty Tertiary Education Partnership, which includes the The University of Waikato, Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology and Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi.

Tauranga secondary schools include Tauranga Boys’ College, Tauranga Girls’ College, Otumoetai College, Bethlehem College, Aquinas College, Mount Maunganui College, Papamoa College, Te Wharekura o Mauao, Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Kura Kōkiri, ACG Tauranga and a Rudolf Steiner School in Welcome Bay.

Tauranga residents have access to multiple shopping options, with a main shopping mall, Bayfair, in Mount Maunganui and Fraser Cove, Tauranga Crossing, Bethlehem Town Centre, Palm Beach Plaza, Fashion Island, Bayfair Shopping Centre, Bay Central and Greerton Village shopping centres spread throughout the region’s suburbs.

Tauranga residents and visitors alike have a wide choice of cultural attractions such as the Tauranga Art Gallery and the “Historic Village on 17th”, which recreates a historic setting with original and replica buildings from early Tauranga. Tauranga is home to the Classic Flyers Museum and the Gyrate Flying Club, where you can experience flying a modern gyroplane.

The National Jazz Festival takes place in Tauranga every Easter and other large events include the Tauranga Seafood Festival and the Tauranga Wine and Food Festival.
