Auckland West was previously known as Waitākere City – a territorial authority in the western part of the urban area of Auckland, governed by the Waitākere City Council from 1989 to 2010. The council was amalgamated with the other authorities of the Auckland Region to form the current Auckland Council. It was New Zealand’s fifth-largest city, with an annual growth of about 2%.

Auckland West has a diverse and relatively young population, with strong population growth predicted over the next 25 years. With easy access to Auckland CBD, the area is popular with families and couples seeking a scenic lifestyle and more affordable housing.

In early 2022, Auckland West had a median house price of $1.1 million, $200,000 less than Auckland City. Green Bay has the highest median house price of $1,355,625, while Ranui has the lowest at $899,662.
