ABOUT AUCKLAND WEST
Auckland West was previously known as Waitākere City – a territorial authority in the western part of the urban area of Auckland, governed by the Waitākere City Council from 1989 to 2010. The council was amalgamated with the other authorities of the Auckland Region to form the current Auckland Council. It was New Zealand’s fifth-largest city, with an annual growth of about 2%.
Auckland West has a diverse and relatively young population, with strong population growth predicted over the next 25 years. With easy access to Auckland CBD, the area is popular with families and couples seeking a scenic lifestyle and more affordable housing.
In early 2022, Auckland West had a median house price of $1.1 million, $200,000 less than Auckland City. Green Bay has the highest median house price of $1,355,625, while Ranui has the lowest at $899,662.
Auckland West provides quick access for locals to stunning beaches, forests and picturesque rural towns. Popular places to visit include:
Kumeu
Situated 25 km north-west of the Auckland CBD, Kumeu is a beautiful rural community famous for its vineyards, breweries, restaurants, galleries and specialty shops. Kumeu is home to New Zealand’s oldest riverside tavern, The Riverhead. The area boasts a wide range of outdoor activities, including the Tree Adventures rope courses in Woodhill Forest, golfing at the Huapai Golf Club, hiking and mountain biking.
West Coast Beaches
Around an hour’s drive from central Auckland, the West Coast beaches Whatipu, Karekare, Piha, Te Henga (Bethells) and Muriwai are known for their rugged beauty and striking black sand. Karekare Falls is located in the western part of Waitakere Ranges Regional Park near Karekare village – the filming location for the movie The Piano.
Kaipara
The Kaipara District is home to the one-kilometre trail of gardens and sculptures at the Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens and the Gibbs Sculpture Farm in Kaipara Harbour. The Kaukapakapa Village Markets are held on the third Sunday of the month and offer local produce, handmade cakes and pastries. The Ātiu Creek Regional Park is well-known for its walking trails, while the Mt Auckland Atuanui Walkway boasts spectacular views from the 305-metre-high summit. The Omeru Reserve is a great spot for a barbecue and is a short walk away from the popular swimming spot at the base of Omeru Falls.
