There’s just something about enjoying your breakfast, lunch or dinner (or all three) outside. But of course, to really get the most out of outdoor dining, you need to put some time and effort into designing an alfresco dining area that really suits your needs. We’ve put together a few tips to turn your outdoor dining area into a tranquil place the whole family can enjoy.
Give yourself some shelter
No alfresco dining area is complete without some shelter. While an uncovered deck is perfectly fine on good weather days, you ideally want to be able to use that space all year round. Adding a roof as part of your outdoor entertaining area completely transforms the space and maximises comfort.
Not only do you get shade when the sun is too hot and protection when it rains, but it also means you can do so much more with the space. For example, if the space isn’t covered, you can’t really leave good quality seating out in the weather. But with shelter overhead, you can set the space up as a true sanctuary.
In fact, many of our next alfresco dining tips wouldn’t be possible without shelter, so before you worry about anything else, got that protection overhead. You can even install walls, half walls, windows or bistro blinds to give yourself even more shelter on those days when the wind and rain are heavier than normal.
Install an outdoor kitchen
What would any alfresco dining be without a nice space to do some outdoor cooking? While the normal household BBQ is a great addition to your outdoor space, why not think a little bigger? You can install some incredible outdoor kitchens these days. They incorporate a BBQ, roasting hood and practically anything else you can think of.
These outdoor kitchens can be freestanding, even on wheels for mobility. Alternatively, you can build them into the area. Whichever way you go, you’ll also get to enjoy lockable storage space underneath to keep all of your cutlery, plates and cooking utensils. Trust us, it’s a sure way to impress your dinner guests!
Comfortable outdoor chairs
As we mentioned before, if you’ve got a traditional deck without a roof, you’re quite limited in the furniture you can use. All-weather outdoor furniture may be convenient but it’s not usually the most comfortable or luxurious. But with a covered space, you can invest in some terrific seating options.
Along with your normal outdoor dining table and chairs, you can include beautiful outdoor couches with soft, comfortable padding. Best of all, you don’t need to worry about it getting wet. To go even more luxurious, you might want to install a TV and kick back in the fresh air to enjoy your favourite shows.
Use a fire pit
Fire pits are always great in any outdoor setting. Whether it’s a campfire or your backyard, everybody loves to have a fire going while they enjoy the outdoors. Gone are the days where you need to get a rusty old metal drum to start a fire in though. Today, there are so many beautiful fire pit designs that really enhance your outdoor space.
Whether you just enjoy looking into the fire while you enjoy dinner or you need some extra warmth on those cold nights, ask your builder about fire pit installation. Also, do some online research on fire pit designs, because there are some incredible ones out there, either freestanding or permanently installed.
Remember the indoor/outdoor flow
One thing that often gets forgotten when planning an alfresco dining area is the indoor/outdoor flow. What this means is creating a seamless flow between your outdoor and indoor spaces. The best way to achieve this is with glass sliding doors because they can be opened nice and wide to essentially create one much larger space.
Naturally, you might not want to leave the doors open all the time because of insects, but there are measures you can take there too, such as magnetic fly mesh. Basically, the idea is to walk out of your house and into a space that’s equally as beautiful and relaxing as it is inside.
Freshen up with some plants
Finally, if you really want to turn your alfresco dining area into an oasis, don’t forget to decorate it with some plants. The great thing is, the space is outdoors but usually undercover, so you can choose from a wide range of indoor and outdoor plants as long as you keep in mind their direct sunlight requirements.
Some carefully placed pot plants in corners are a nice touch, but don’t be limited. Check your local garden centre for a range of different potting ideas, such as hanging baskets, wall baskets and many, many more. For that little bit of extra relaxation, you can even incorporate a nice water feature to really set your alfresco dining area off.
